As if healing the wounds of a devastating war, the 1960s — beginning with the Tokyo Olympics — were a time when Japan suddenly came alive.
After the war, with the influx of Western culture, young people immersed themselves in American fashion. That was the Ivy look, and it endures to this day. The Ivy look spread among the students and alumni of America's storied private universities — the Ivy League — with button-down shirts, blazers, and loafers as its staples.
In Japan, the brand VAN became a sensation, and young people strode through Ginza and Aoyama dressed head to toe in the style. Aoyama went on to become known as a source of youth fashion, producing world-renowned designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Issey Miyake, and Rei Kawakubo.
